What to Wear to Reformer & Pilates: 4 Essential Tips
How to Find the Perfect Outfit for Your Flow
Your time on the mat or the reformer carriage is your personal pause. A space to prioritize yourself, reconnect with your inner strength, and find your balance.
A seamless experience starts with the right pilates wear – an outfit you feel effortlessly comfortable in and barely need to adjust during class.
Whether you're looking for beginner guidance or upgrading your existing workout collection, we’ve gathered the essential rules of thumb right here. Avoid common outfit distractions and step into the studio feeling grounded and empowered.

1. Choose high-waisted pilates tights with a supportive fit
Whether practicing classic mat pilates or working on the reformer carriage, your routine includes everything from deep squats to leg extensions overhead. The last thing you need mid-flow is tights slipping down or rolling at the waist.
Look for sleek pilates tights or leggings designed with a high, supportive waistband. Your standard workout leggings can work great, provided they don't feature back zippers or hard buckles that press into the mat or carriage. The fabric should feel like a soft second skin – lightweight and flexible, yet 100% squat-proof so you feel completely covered in every movement.
2. A top that stays put
There is a distinct difference between yoga and pilates apparel. While yoga wear often leans looser for gentle stretching, pilates – especially reformer pilates – requires a closer fit.
When lying flat or pulling on the straps, your top should remain secure. Loose tops can slide over your face during inversions or snag in the machine's springs. A fitted sports bra paired with a body-hugging top delivers maximum freedom of movement, optimal support, and zero distractions so you can focus entirely on your breath.
3. Bring an extra layer for before and after class
While your body heats up quickly during class, the final minutes are typically spent in gentle stretches and focused relaxation.
A light long-sleeve layer or wrap top is an essential companion in your gym bag to keep you warm during cooldown – or as you head out into the rest of your day. A soft wrap shirt is ideal because it wraps on and off smoothly without needing to be pulled over your head.
4. Do you need pilates socks and grip socks?
A common question among beginners is: What do you wear on your feet for reformer pilates?
This comes down to the core differences between mat and reformer pilates. On the mat, you primarily use your own body weight and can often train barefoot. Reformer pilates utilizes a specialized frame with a gliding carriage, springs, and a footbar, which demands greater foot traction.
Because of this, you’ll train either barefoot or in dedicated pilates grip socks (also known as non-slip pilates socks). Many studios require grip socks for both hygiene and safety. The silicone grippers on the sole ensure a firm hold on the carriage and footbar, keeping you balanced as the heat builds and you enter deep stretches.
Three quick rules of thumb before your next class:
-
Avoid zippers and snaps: Metal details can press into your spine and scratch the upholstery of the reformer carriage.
-
Prioritize breathability and stretch: Choose buttery-soft, highly stretchable fabrics that let your skin breathe freely.
-
Keep it simple: Minimalist pieces with a secure, snug fit offer the ultimate foundation. The less you adjust your clothing, the deeper your focus and flow.
